Comlite manufactures IP68 LED underwater lights for swimming pools, fountains, ponds and architectural water features. The range runs from 1W mini fittings to 24W high-power spotlights, in recessed, surface mounted and fully submersible formats, with single colour, RGB and RGBW control.

An underwater light fails for one of two reasons: water gets past the seal, or the housing corrodes. We build the range in 316L stainless steel with a fully potted IP68 seal, so the fitting survives chlorinated pool water, saltwater features and continuous submersion. Choose the format first, then the colour, then the beam angle.

Guide de sélection rapide

  • By installation: recessed and niche underwater lights sit flush with the pool wall and suit new builds; surface mounted fittings screw onto an existing wall and suit renovation.
  • Par faisceau: underwater spot lights give a focused beam for fountain jets and feature walls; wide-angle fittings wash a whole pool.
  • By colour: warm white for residential pools, cool white for municipal and hotel pools, RGB or RGBW for fountains and colour-changing features.
  • By wattage: 1-3W for accents and steps, 6-12W for standard pool walls, 18-24W for tall fountains and large water features.

Every unit is pressure-tested before shipment, and we support OEM configurations including beam angle, température de couleur, cable length and control protocol. LED Underwater Lights: Guide complet des spécifications

Comlite manufactures IP68 LED pool lights and underwater fountain lights for swimming pools, water features, ponds and hot spring installations. Our range includes recessed (niche) pool lights, surface mounted pool lights, fountain and water-feature lights, and RGBW colour-changing models — all built around sealed stainless steel housings for continuous submersion.

This page covers the practical decisions behind specifying an underwater pool light: recessed versus surface mounted, what IP68 actually guarantees, how to choose between single colour, RGB and RGBW, and which housing material survives chlorinated or salt water.

Recessed vs Surface Mounted Pool Lights

The choice is usually made for you by the pool structure.

Recessed (Niche) Pool Lights

Recessed lights sit inside a niche built into the pool wall, so the lens finishes flush with the surface. They are the standard choice for new concrete and liner pools, give the cleanest visual result, and are what most designers specify. The trade-off is installation: the niche must be positioned and waterproofed during construction. Retrofitting a niche into an existing pool means breaking the shell. Surface Mounted Pool Lights

Surface mounted lights screw or bracket directly onto the pool wall, protruding slightly into the water. They are the pragmatic answer for renovation projects, above-ground pools, concrete ponds and fibreglass shells where cutting a niche is not viable. Installation is faster and fully reversible. See surface mounted pool lights.

What IP68 Actually Means for a Pool Light

IP ratings are often quoted without explanation, so here is the part that matters:

  • IP65 — dust-tight, protected against low-pressure water jets. Adequate for a light near a pool, not in one.
  • IP67 — protégé contre l'immersion temporaire jusqu'à 1 mètre. Not designed for permanent submersion.
  • IP68 — protégé contre l'immersion continue au-delà de 1 mètre, with the actual depth defined by the manufacturer.

For any light that stays underwater, IP68 is the minimum. But the code alone is not enough — ask what depth the rating was tested at, and whether the test covered thermal cycling. A light that passes a cold bench test can still fail after a season of daily heating and cooling.

Single Colour, RGB or RGBW?

  • Single colour (blanc chaud, cool white, bleu) — highest lumen output per watt, lowest cost, simplest control. The right answer for most residential pools and for any project where the light is mainly functional.
  • RVB — red, green and blue channels mixed to produce colour. Good for decorative water features and mood lighting, but the white it produces is a mixed approximation and looks noticeably off on white pool surfaces.
  • RGBW — adds a dedicated white channel alongside RGB. You get saturated colour when you want it and clean, true white when you need it. This is what we recommend for hotel, resort and architectural projects. See our RGBW colour changing pool lights.

Housing Material: 316 Stainless Steel vs Polymer

The water chemistry decides this one.

For standard chlorinated freshwater pools, a quality polymer or ABS housing performs well and keeps cost down. For saltwater pools, seawater features, hot springs and mineral spas, specify 316 or 316L stainless steel. Lower grades will pit and stain in chloride-rich water, and a failed housing means draining the pool to replace the fitting — the light itself is the cheapest part of that job.

We build our underwater range in 316L stainless steel and test for both UV resistance and corrosion in seawater conditions. Material certificates for the 316L stainless steel and the corrosion test method are provided with your quotation.

Applications

Swimming Pools

Residential, hotel and municipal pools. Recessed lights for new builds, surface mounted for renovation. Warm white remains the most specified colour; RGBW is increasingly requested for resort work.

Fountains and Water Features

Fountain lights face moving water, splash zones and frequent air-water cycling, which is harder on seals than steady immersion. Compact underwater spotlights with adjustable brackets are usually the right form factor. See our LED fountain lights.

Hot Springs and Spas

Elevated temperature accelerates seal ageing and corrosion. Use 316L stainless housings, confirm the rated operating temperature, and avoid polymer housings in mineral water.

Ponds and Landscape Water

Decorative ponds and garden water features typically use lower wattage units with wider beam angles, often in warm white to avoid a clinical look at night.

Our Pool and Fountain Lights

Pourquoi s'approvisionner chez Comlite

Our pool and fountain range shares its sealing technology with our deep sea fishing lights — the same IP68 potting, the same 316L stainless steel housings and the same pressure-test regime, applied to a decorative product. That is unusual: most decorative pool lights are not built to a standard derived from 100-metre submersion work.

  • 316L stainless steel housings with anti-UV and anti-corrosion testing
  • IP68 as standard, with depth-rated pressure testing
  • Recessed, surface mounted and submersible spotlight formats from one factory
  • OEM support for project specifications: Angle du faisceau, température de couleur, longueur du câble, control protocol

Questions fréquemment posées

What IP rating do I need for an underwater pool light?

IP68. IP67 only covers temporary immersion to 1 metre and is not sufficient for a light that remains underwater. Always confirm the tested depth behind the IP68 claim, not just the code.

Can I replace an existing halogen pool light with LED?

In most cases yes. Surface mounted LED units can often be fitted to the existing fixing points, and retrofit LED lamps are available for some standard niche sizes. Send us a photo and the dimensions of your current fitting and we will confirm.

What is the difference between RGB and RGBW pool lights?

RGB mixes red, green and blue to approximate white, which looks tinted on white pool surfaces. RGBW adds a dedicated white channel, giving true white light plus full colour capability. RGBW is the better choice for architectural and hospitality projects.

Do I need stainless steel for a saltwater pool?

Oui. Chloride-rich water pits lower grades of steel and degrades standard polymer housings faster. Specify 316 or 316L stainless steel for saltwater pools, seawater features and hot springs.
